April 18, 2012

The 2012 Waccamaw Sports Classic will take place on the Coastal Carolina University campus on Friday, April 20, starting at 8 a.m. The event is for athletes ages 50 and older, and registration is Friday morning in the Kimbel Arena lobby. For spectators, the event is free and open to the public.

More than 300 senior athletes will be participating in a variety of sport and recreational events including archery, horseshoes, softball, track and field events, pickleball, shuffleboard and others. Several events are sanctioned Senior Olympic events where participants will be qualifying for state and national competitions. There will also be an opening ceremony, a luncheon, a dance party and award ceremonies.

Recreation and sports management students and faculty are planning and conducting some of the events. Exercise and sports science majors will be presenting educational workshops for senior athletes on topics such as strength training, flexibility, mental skills and physical activity. The Waccamaw Sports Classic is a partnership between Georgetown, Horry and Williamsburg counties. The event coincides with the goals of both the South Carolina Senior Sports Classic and National Senior Games Association.
