Lowcountry artist to teach summer youth camp at CCU
The three art camps led by McLaughlin include:
• Glitter, Graphics & Graffiti, June 4-8 (ages 6-10) – Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., $75.
• Drawing Camp, June 11-15 (ages 6-10) – Monday-Friday, 1 to 5 p.m., $75.
• Art Studio, July 9-13 (ages 10-12) – Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., $150.
McLaughlin's acclaimed artistic and teaching talents have led him to become a favorite instructor in the area. During the academic year, he teaches for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Coastal Carolina University in Litchfield and Myrtle Beach and for the Georgetown County Cultural Council in Georgetown.
Born and raised in the area, McLaughlin earned a fine arts degree at the College of Charleston. His life work reflects a passion for the local culture and scenery, capturing the essence of the Carolina Lowcountry from the Grand Strand of Myrtle Beach, the historic homes and buildings of Georgetown and Charleston to the marshes of Beaufort. Working in oils, acrylics and watercolors, McLaughlin concentrates on color and texture in an Impressionist-influenced style.
Celebrities Chubby Checker and Oprah Winfrey own works by McLaughlin, and his art has hung in the Library of Congress. His passion for the local area spans more than just the culture and scenery, but to the people and community as well. He has donated more than 80 paintings to the various libraries and churches of the Lowcountry, Red Cross, Big Brother/Big Sisters, Salvation Army, Tara Hall Home for Boys, Maritime Museum, Ducks Unlimited and Trident Culinary Institute.
