Coastal Carolina University professor James Henderson's new book, "Victim of Globalization: How Illegal Drugs Destroyed Colombia's Peace," sold out the first week after it was released in Colombia, South America.

The book, published in Spanish by Siglo del Hombres Editores, is a comprehensive account of the export drug trade in Colombia, from both an economic and a human perspective. Beginning with the country's marijuana traffic in the late 1960s, the book offers a historical overview of Colombia's narcotics activities, which has taken some 300,000 lives in the past 30 years.

To promote the new book, Henderson recently participated in an International Book Fair in Bogotá. As part of the event, he delivered a talk about his personal recollections of the development of Colombia's illegal drug trade and its attending violence. Since 1966, Henderson and his family have periodically visited and lived in Colombia.

"Half of the first 1,000-copy print run was taken by a Mexican distributor and the other half by a Colombian bookstore chain," said Henderson, a professor of politics who has been a CCU faculty member since?1986. "Now that the book is out in its Spanish-language edition, I'm working on placing the English-language edition."

Henderson earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Centenary College of Louisiana, a master’s degree in history from the University of Arizona and a Ph.D. in Latin American history from Texas Christian University. He has been a Fulbright Scholar and has written numerous books and scholarly articles on Latin American history and culture.
