June 29, 2012

Coastal Carolina University has been named to the 2012 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, an annual recognition program that celebrates exemplary commitment to service and volunteering from institutions of higher education.

The award program is sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) as a way to pay tribute to the work of college students, faculty, staff and alumni who support their local communities through service.

During the academic year 2011-2012 at CCU:

* 350 students were engaged in academic service learning

* 2,811 were engaged in some type of community service

* 1,493 engaged in at least 20 hours of community service

* 23,309 total hours were volunteered

"Preparing our students to be good, giving citizens by providing them with opportunities to address local and global issues in their college years is central to the mission of this University," says Robert Sheehan, provost and senior vice president for academic and student affairs.

The President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, launched in 2006, highlights the role colleges and universities play in solving community problems and placing students on a lifelong path of civic engagement.

A total of 642 colleges and universities were admitted to the Honor Roll for their impact on issues from literacy and neighborhood revitalization to supporting at-risk youth.

Campuses named to this year's Honor Roll reported that nearly one million of their students engaged in service learning and more than 1.6 million participated in other forms of community service, serving a total of more than 105 million hours.

Five higher education institutions received the Presidential Award of the 2012 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to community service. The five awardees are Carson-Newman College, Miami University, North Carolina State University, Seattle University and the University of Pennsylvania.
