September 17, 2012

Coastal Carolina University has been designated a "Military-Friendly School" by G.I. Jobs Magazine for the third consecutive year.

This honor placed CCU in the top 15 percent of all schools nationwide as a university committed to educating military veterans. CCU will be included in a listing in the 2013 Guide to Military Friendly Schools, which publishes this month, and in an online listing at MilitaryFriendlySchools.com.

"Coastal Carolina University is 100 percent committed to supporting those persons who have served in the military," said Robert Sheehan, provost and senior vice president for academic and student affairs at CCU.

CCU offers the following services and activities in support of military students and veterans:

- A U.S. Army ROTC program that has nearly tripled its participation level in just three years. Seventy students are currently enrolled in the program.

- CCU's Center for Military and Veterans Studies records and preserves the oral histories of South Carolina veterans for the Library of Congress.

- Student Veterans of CCU, a student organization, assists students by providing an initial point-of-contact information center for military students.

- Coastal Carolina University Veterans Association includes almost 100 current or retired faculty and staff as well as alumni who have served honorably in any branch of the military, active/reserve or National Guards.

There are currently 174 student veterans enrolled at CCU.

The 1,700 colleges and universities on this year's list prioritize the recruitment of students with military experience by offering scholarships and discounts, veterans clubs and other service s. More than 12,000 schools nationwide were considered.
