Athletic hallway named for trustee Duke Brown

October 3, 2012

Robert Duke Brown of Camden, a longtime Coastal Carolina University trustee, was recently honored with the naming of the "Robert Duke Brown Hall of Champions" in the University's Adkins Field House. The hallway, which connects the George F. "Buddy" Sasser Hall of Fame to the building's Football Suite, was named for Brown to recognize his staunch advocacy and support of CCU's football program.

Brown has served on the CCU board of trustees since it was first established in 1993, when Coastal Carolina left the University of South Carolina system to become an independent, state-supported institution. A retired educator, Brown has served on many committees of the board including five years on the athletics committee and seven years on the student affairs committee.

From the beginning of his involvement on the board in 1993, Brown advocated adding football to the University's Division I intercollegiate sports program. The decision to bring football to CCU was first announced in 1999, and the Chanticleer football team played its first game in 2003.
