Landrum named chief compliance officer at CCU
As chief compliance officer, Landrum will lead an institution-wide compliance program that provides accountability for all departmental regulations. She will coordinate all campus compliance procedures required by various governmental regulatory laws, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), Title IV financial aid reporting, Title VII of the Civil Rights Act and Title IX of the Higher Education Act.
"B.J. has considerable professional experience dealing with legal regulations, policy and compliance, and Coastal Carolina University is fortunate that she is heading up this important new position," said CCU President David A. DeCenzo. "As a result of increasing regulatory and safety requirements, it has become standard practice throughout higher education to have a dedicated position to oversee all compliance functions."
The chief compliance officer serves as the administrative representative on the university's Internal Audit Committee, assessing campuswide risks and making recommendations to the president and the board of trustees.
Landrum will also serve as the Freedom of Information Act officer for CCU, which will entail legal review and dissemination of documents in compliance with state public information laws.
An attorney as well as a registered nurse, Landrum served as assistant solicitor, legal nurse consultant for the 15th Judicial Circuit for seven years. During her nursing career, she served on the Ethics Committee and the Policy and Procedure Committee of the Carolinas Hospital System in Florence and was charged with policy compliance at HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital. As a certified nurse life care planner and legal nurse consultant, she conducted standards of care analysis and advised attorneys on medical issues.
Prior to her present position, she served as Equal Employment Opportunity manager in CCU's Office of Human Resources, where she was involved in facilitating university policies and procedures relating to governmental compliance.
A native of Florence, Landrum earned a bachelor's degree in nursing, summa cum laude, from the Medical University of South Carolina and a juris doctor degree from the University of South Carolina School of Law. She is a member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys and the S.C. Bar Employment and Labor Practices Committee. She also serves on the Federal Emergency Management Association's (FEMA) Medical Reserve Corp.
