The life, legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. celebrated at CCU

Alonzo Jones, associate dean of student life for Arizona State University, is the featured speaker for the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration, "Beyond 'I Have a Dream' a Look Into a Life," at Coastal Carolina University's Wheelwright Auditorium on Thursday, Jan. 17, at 7 p.m. This event is free and open to the public with a ticket.

Jones is the founder of Apoch Programs, a life skills training curriculum geared toward youth-based community organizations. He also develops programs within higher education setting designed to improve enrollment, retention and graduation rates of African American, Latino and Native American youth.

Jones is a graduate of Arizona State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in justice studies. He also earned a master's degree in developmental education from Southwest Texas State University.

The Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration is a campuswide event that promotes unity and diversity while highlighting King's triumphs and struggles in the fight for civil rights. Members of the Office of Multicultural Student Service's Leadership Challenge Initiative will also participate in the celebration. A memorial presentation is scheduled and the CCU gospel choir, Inspirational Ambassadors, will also perform at the event.
