Musician White offers jazz concert with friends

September 9, 2013

"Matt White and Friends," a night of original jazz and improvised music performed by an all-star jazz collective, is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 16, at 7:30 p.m. in the Edwards Recital Hall. A ticket is required.

Matt White, composer, jazz trumpeter and assistant professor of music at CCU, wil deliver a preview of his upcoming album, titled "Matt White The Super Villian Jazz Band." Described as a "post-bop" update, White's debut CD has been called "a lively and compelling debut that goes beyond the usual formulas with its restless sense of invention in through-composed settings," by allaboutjazz.com. The CD will be released Oct. 1 by Artists Recording Collective.

Joining White onstage is a collective of New York and Nashville musicians, including Jeff Coffin (saxophone -- Dave Matthews Band, The Mu'Tet), Michael Feinberg (bass -- Billy Hart), Joe Davidian (piano -- Chester Thompson Trio) and Dana Hawkins (drums -- Jeremy Pelt).

White earned a bachelor's degree in jazz studies from the University of North Florida, and both a master's and doctorate degree in studio music and jazz from the University of Miami Frost School of Music. He is also the director for CCU's big band Jazz After Hours.

General admission tickets are $15; CCU and HGTC students are $5; CCU and HGTC faculty and staff, alumni, senior citizens (ages 65 and over), Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) members and teens (ages 11 to 17) are $10; and children (ages 10 and under) are $5.

The Recital Hall is located in the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts, located at 133 Chanticleer Drive W. in Conway.
