'The Sweetest Swing in Baseball' hits the CCU stage

September 13, 2013

Playwright Rebecca Gilman's dark and satirical look at public identity, "The Sweetest Swing in Baseball," will be staged in Edwards Theatre by Coastal Carolina University's Department of Theatre. The show will run Thursday, Sept. 19, through Sunday, Sept. 22 and Wednesday, Sept. 25, through Saturday, Sept. 28, with 7:30 p.m. show times. There will be an additional matinee at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 28.

In Gilman's comic drama, artist Dana Fielding has hit bottom. Her gallery show flops, her boyfriend leaves and a failed suicide attempt lands her in a psychiatric ward. When she discovers her cut-rate insurance will only pay for a 10-day stay without a more serious diagnosis, she takes on the persona of Darryl Strawberry, famous and troubled baseball star who has "the sweetest swing in baseball." Her fellow patients help Dana memorize Strawberry's stats to fool the doctors into diagnosing her pseudo-psychosis.

The show will be directed by Gwendolyn Schwinke, assistant professor of theatre at CCU. The cast includes CCU theatre majors Shaleigh Phillips, Connor Kendall, Nathan Smith, Krista Gierlach, Miranda Frederick, Lexie Wohlfort, Michael Onofaro, Stephen Craig, Riley Phoenix and Juliann Clark. The understudies for this show are Korinny Sanchez, Katrina Jones and Chantall Montgomery. The set designers include CCU theatre majors Will Dameron and AJ Gardner, with Taylor Dankovich serving as stage manager.

General admission tickets are $15; CCU/HGTC students and children (12 and under) are $5; and CCU/HGTC faculty and staff, alumni, OLLI members, senior citizens and teens are $10.

The Edwards Theatre is located in the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts building at 133 Chanticleer Drive W. in Conway.
