WIPL awards scholarships to 21 CCU students

Twenty-one Coastal Carolina University students have been awarded annual scholarships for the 2013-2014 academic year through Women in Philanthropy and Leadership for Coastal Carolina University (WIPL).

WIPL is a group of philanthropic women from the community and the university whose donations and service promote higher education and leadership. Each year the organization awards annual scholarships to deserving Coastal Carolina University students. 

To be eligible for the 2013-2014 WIPL annual scholarship, currently enrolled students must have completed a minimum of 15 credit hours with a cumulative collegiate grade point average of at least 3.0, and demonstrate financial need. Preference is given to students from Horry, Georgetown, Dillon, Marion or Williamsburg counties. Candidates must also submit a written statement expressing how the scholarship will assist their academic preparation for attaining their career goals and how they demonstrate leadership. With the recommendations of the WIPL Scholarship Committee, all awards are coordinated through the university's Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships. 

Recipients of the 2013-2014 WIPL annual scholarships and specified donor/honoree scholarships are:

- Faizaan Ahmed* of Murrells Inlet, S.C., a senior majoring in biology, Sanders Tech-Ed Foundation

- Dorothy Connor of Ladson, S.C., a senior majoring in health promotion,  The Sun News Educational Foundation

- Nekita Ford of Conway, S.C., a senior majoring in psychology, The Sun News Educational Foundation

- Flyura Gasca of Myrtle Beach, S.C., a junior majoring in elementary education, Sanders Tech-Ed Foundation in honor of Mrs. Grace Jolly Ewing and Mrs. Mary Jane Sanders

- Mackenzie Hadley-Theobald* of Myrtle Beach, S.C., a junior majoring in psychology, Sanders Tech-Ed Foundation in honor of Mrs. Grace Jolly Ewing and Mrs. Mary Jane Sanders

- Shannon Kelahan-Pierson of Phoenix, Ariz., a sophomore majoring in marine science, Aramark Campus Services

- Lyndsey King * of Westfield, Penn., a junior majoring in marine science, The Sun News Educational Foundation

- Carolyn Kirby of Bennettsville, S.C., a senior majoring in early childhood education, The Sun News Educational Foundation

- Megan Larwood of Berlin, Md., a senior majoring in middle grades education, Aramark Campus Services

- Vanesa Lavado of Conway, S.C., a sophomore majoring in theatre, Life and Legacy: William Howard

- Haley McClelland of Waldwick, N.J., a junior majoring in sociology

- Alexandria Miller of Myrtle Beach, S.C., a junior majoring in English, The Sun News Educational Foundation

- Kalin Brooke Mixon * of Hemingway, S.C., a junior majoring in early childhood education

- Emily Murray* of Summerville, S.C., a junior majoring in marine science

- Rayne Newswanger of Hegins, Pa., a sophomore majoring in marine science

- Brian H. Nguyen* of Myrtle Beach, S.C., a junior majoring in marine science, Sanders Tech-Ed Foundation

- NyRhonda Nixon of Georgetown, S.C., a senior majoring in early childhood education

- Chandler Parnell* of Conway, S.C., a senior majoring in music performance, Zonta Foundation of Myrtle Beach in honor of Ruth F. Walker

- Jessica Paternoster of Conway, S.C., a senior majoring in special education

- Tara Schang of Brookfield, Conn., a sophomore majoring in middle grades education, Aramark Campus Services

- Kiley Wilson of Georgetown, S.C., a senior majoring in early childhood education, Sanders Tech-Ed Foundation

In addition to the annual scholarships, two new scholarships have been established this year. Recipients of the Scott and Pamela Pyle "Make a Difference" Scholarship are:

- Amber Eckersley of Conway, S.C., a senior majoring in history

- Alison Cohen of Rockville, Md., a junior majoring in special education

WIPL has also awarded scholarships for two students to attend the Washington Internship Institute in Washington, D.C., to study global women's leadership. The recipients are:

- Alana Thorton of Greer, S.C., a senior political science major

- Anastasia Rhodes of Myrtle Beach, S.C., a senior majoring in political science

In all, WIPL has awarded $35,500 in scholarships to deserving Coastal Carolina University students for the 2013-2014 academic year.
