Twenty-one Coastal Carolina University students have been awarded annual scholarships for the 2013-2014 academic year through Women in Philanthropy and Leadership for Coastal Carolina University (WIPL).

WIPL is a group of philanthropic women from the community and the university whose donations and service promote higher education and leadership. Each year the organization awards annual scholarships to deserving Coastal Carolina University students. 

To be eligible for the 2013-2014 WIPL annual scholarship, currently enrolled students must have completed a minimum of 15 credit hours with a cumulative collegiate grade point average of at least 3.0, and demonstrate financial need. Preference is given to students from Horry, Georgetown, Dillon, Marion or Williamsburg counties. Candidates must also submit a written statement expressing how the scholarship will assist their academic preparation for attaining their career goals and how they demonstrate leadership. With the recommendations of the WIPL Scholarship Committee, all awards are coordinated through the university's Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships.

- Dorothy Connor of Ladson, S.C., a senior majoring in health promotion,  The Sun News Educational Foundation

- Nekita Ford of Conway, S.C., a senior majoring in psychology, The Sun News Educational Foundation

- Flyura Gasca of Myrtle Beach, S.C., a junior majoring in elementary education, Sanders Tech-Ed Foundation in honor of Mrs. Grace Jolly Ewing and Mrs. Mary Jane Sanders

- Mackenzie Hadley-Theobald* of Myrtle Beach, S.C., a junior majoring in psychology, Sanders Tech-Ed Foundation in honor of Mrs. Grace Jolly Ewing and Mrs. Mary Jane Sanders

- Shannon Kelahan-Pierson of Phoenix, Ariz., a sophomore majoring in marine science, Aramark Campus Services

- Emily Murray* of Summerville, S.C., a junior majoring in marine science

In addition to the annual scholarships, two new scholarships have been established this year. Recipients of the Scott and Pamela Pyle "Make a Difference" Scholarship are:

- Amber Eckersley of Conway, S.C., a senior majoring in history

- Alison Cohen of Rockville, Md., a junior majoring in special education

WIPL has also awarded scholarships for two students to attend the Washington Internship Institute in Washington, D.C., to study global women's leadership. The recipients are:

- Alana Thorton of Greer, S.C., a senior political science major

- Anastasia Rhodes of Myrtle Beach, S.C., a senior majoring in political science

In all, WIPL has awarded $35,500 in scholarships to deserving Coastal Carolina University students for the 2013-2014 academic year.
