January 24, 2014

Lunar New Year, an Asian awareness celebration, will be held in the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts Recital Hall at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 30. The event is free and open to the public.

Lunar New Year refers to the beginning of the year based on the lunar or lunisolar calendar. Jan. 31 is the start of 2014, according to the lunar calendar and is the year of the horse. The celebration, sponsored by Coastal Carolina University's Office of Multicultural Student Services, will feature various Asian music, food and dance.

The highlight of the event will be a performance by the Atlanta Chinese Dance Company (ACDC) portraying appreciation of Chinese history and culture through the art of Chinese dance. Founded in 1991, the ACDC currently trains more than 80 dancers and performs at various locations around the metro Atlanta area. ACDC has performed the Chinese variation of the Atlanta Ballet's "The Nutcracker" at the Fabulous Fox Theater for 10 consecutive years and appeared in the opening and closing ceremonies of the Centennial Olympic Games in 1996.
