CCU celebrates Library Week with authors, edible books

April 2, 2014

Coastal Carolina University's Kimbel Library and Bryan Information Commons joins libraries across the country to celebrate National Library Week, April 13 through 19. Events this year include the ever-popular Edible Book Fair and book discussions with two prominent authors, Batt Humphreys and Bret Lott. All events are free and open to the public.

On Monday, April 14, at 4 p.m. in the Bryan Information Commons, author Batt Humphreys of Charleston will lead a discussion about his historical novel "Dead Weight." He is a Georgia native who worked for CBS News in New York for 15 years as a senior producer, managing the coverage of many of the important events over the last quarter century. "Dead Weight" is based on the true story of a murder in Charleston that occurred nearly100 years ago.

The Edible Book Fair is set for Wednesday, April 16, at noon in the Bryan Information Commons lobby. Students, faculty, staff and the public are encouraged to submit their edible creations based on a book to win prizes. Entries can look like a book in form and shape, be inspired by a book or author, be a pun of a book title, refer to a book character, reproduce a book cover or just have something to do with books in general. Submissions should be delivered to the Kimbel Library Circulation Desk between 9 and 11 a.m. on April 16. Judging will take place from noon to 2 p.m. All attendees will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite edible book creation.

Novelist Bret Lott is the featured author for a book discussion on Friday, April 18, at 4 p.m. in the Bryan Information Commons second floor. Lott is a New York Times best-selling author of 13 books. His novel "Jewel" was an Oprah Book Club pick. Lott has spoken at the White House and is a member of the National Council on the Arts. He currently teaches English at the College of Charleston.
