CCU’s Symphonic Band to perform ‘Movement for Rosa’

October 1, 2014

Coastal Carolina University's Symphonic Band will present "A Movement for Rosa" on Tuesday, Oct. 7, at 7:30 p.m. in Wheelwright Auditorium. General admission is $5.

The composition honors civil rights heroine Rosa Parks and commemorates the 50th anniversary of the signing of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Preston McKever-Floyd, professor of religion, will introduce the piece giving historical context.

The concert will also feature "Vanity Fair," a comic overture inspired by the 1848 novel by English author William Makepeace Thackeray, and "Liberty Fanfare" by John Williams.

Directed by Jim Tully, the 50-member student band will also feature CCU music faculty member and clarinetist Kathryn Tucker on Rossini's "Introduction, Theme and Variations," a clarinet showpiece with five colorful variations.

"We'll open with the 'Star Spangled Banner' by Francis Scott Key to commemorate the 200th anniversary of its writing on Sept. 13, 1814," said Tully. "Most people only know the first verse, but we have printed the original four verses in the program with its original spellings."

General admission is $5, CCU faculty and staff, $4 and CCU students $3. For more information, call the Wheelwright Box Office at 843-349-ARTS (2787) or visit Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wheelwright Auditorium is located at 108 Spadoni Park Circle, Conway.
