CCU wins Best School award in Horry County cleanup

Coastal Carolina University won the Outstanding School Award in the Community Cleanup and Beautification Awards for 2014. Keep Horry County Beautiful held a countywide, volunteer litter cleanup event on Saturday, Nov. 8.

The 108 participants from the campus and community of CCU picked up 166 bags of trash in its area for District 8. Along with several families and individuals, Alpha Delta Pi, Sigma Kappa and Fiji registered their student organizations to participate. The event featured 12 locations around the county where approximately 700 volunteers came out and picked up 1,056 bags of litter.

The team leaders for the CCU host site included Shelby Farmer, Kate Vanderpool, Kaylie Eisel, Kathleen Durdock, Mikael Huffman, Jeremy Monday, Colby Causey, Mallory Kohari, Nicole Edwards, and Jennifer Sellers, who is sustainability coordinator for the University.

Participating agencies and partners for the event include Keep Horry County Beautiful, PalmettoPride, Horry County Schools, Carolina Forest Civic Association, Greater Burgess Community Association, Chicora Indian Tribe, Horry County Solid Waste Authority, Coastal Carolina Association of Realtors, Coast RTA, Myrtle Beach Speedway, Chick-fil-A, the Jamestown Chefs, Cool Hand and more.
