CCU presents ‘Symphonic Gamers’ concert

April 21, 2015

A "Symphonic Gamers" concert will be presented by Coastal Carolina University's Coastal Winds and the Symphonic Band in Wheelwright Auditorium on Monday, April 27, at 7:30 p.m. General admission is $5.

The ensembles will perform "Sobre las Olas" ("Over the Waves"), as well as compositions by David Gillingham and Karl Orff, all of which have influenced composers of video game music over the years. Also featured will be an electric guitar concerto called "Chaos Theory" by Jim Bonney, which will feature CCU guitar professor Daniel Hull.

There will be a medley of game music based on the international orchestral concert series "Video Games Live!" which includes music from Civilization IV, Starcraft and Kingdom Hearts, with accompanying video projections on a screen behind the band. The concert concludes with "Halo," a wind band, video and sound effects piece.

James Tully, director of bands and assistant professor of music at Coastal, earned a bachelor's degree in music education and master's degree in wind band conducting from West Virginia University and an Ed.D. from the University of Memphis. Prior to coming to CCU, he had an 11-year career leading middle and high school band programs in Tennessee, Mississippi and South Carolina.

Hull is an active soloist, ensemble musician and teacher. He has performed throughout the United States, Europe and the Caribbean. At CCU, he teaches guitar, music appreciation, music theory and ear-training at CCU. He also directs the CCU guitar ensembles and is an instructor at Francis Marion University. He earned his doctorate in musical arts from the Eastman School of Music where he studied with Nicholas Goluses.

Wheelwright Auditorium is located at 108 Spadoni Park Circle on the Conway campus. Tickets cost $5 for adults; $4 for senior citizens, alumni and CCU faculty/staff; and $3 for CCU students.
