Campbell and Gelibert represent CCU well at Games

Coastal Carolina University alumna Amber Campbell and CCU rising senior Jessica Gelibert represented CCU's track and field program well in the Pan American Games July 10 to 26 in Toronto.

Campbell, a two-time U.S.A. Olympian, earned a silver medal in the hammer throw. The five-time All-American's toss of 233 feet, 8 inches was just short of winner Rosa Rodriguez of Venezuela (234-11).

Campbell's next international competition will be at the NACAC Senior Area Championships in San Jose, Costa Rica, on Saturday, Aug. 8, in preparation for the IAAF World Championship in Beijing, China Aug. 22 to 30.

Gelibert, who represented Haiti at the games, ran out of lane one and posted a time of 1:00.23. The event was won by Shamier Little, the reigning NCAA champion and world leader in the event, with a time of 55.50.

Campbell, who graduated with a bachelor's degree in psychology in 2004, competed in the hammer throw at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, and the 2012 Olympics in London. She received a bronze in the 2011 Pan Am Games held in Guadalajara, and competed in the 2005, 2009, 2011 and 2013 International Association of Athletics Federations championships.
