Poetry collection will be performed at CCU

September 16, 2015

"Songs of Travel," a poetry collection recited through song, will be performed by Coastal Carolina University faculty members on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 4 p.m. in the Edwards Recital Hall with admission of $7.

"Songs of Travel" is a collection by Robert Louis Stevenson that explores the theme of wanderlust. The collection inspired a British composer Ralph Vaughn Williams to create a song cycle for baritone and piano in 1984. The performance at CCU will premiere South Carolina composer and CCU faculty member Andrew Fowler's song cycle based on the same source. It will feature other CCU faculty and frequent collaborators, baritone Jeffrey Jones and pianist Philip Powell.

Jones has performed with many other operas and choruses including the Arizona Opera and the Atlanta Symphony Chorus. He received his MM in opera performance and DMA in vocal arts from Arizona State University. He teaches voice and vocal pedagogy at CCU.

Powell has been with CCU since 1988, teaching piano and piano pedagogy. He has performed with the South Carolina Symphony Orchestra and is a frequent soloist with the Long Bay Symphony.

Fowler's expertise is in music theory and aural skills. As a composer, his 2007 "Directions for Singing" was premiered in New York at Avery Fisher Hall in Lincoln Center. His choral compositions are performed throughout the United States.

Teens, CCU and HGTC alumni, OLLI members, groups and senior citizens receive a 20% discount. CCU and HGTC students can purchase tickets for $5.

Edwards Recital Hall is located in room 152 of the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts building, 133 Chanticleer Drive, Conway. For more information, email culturalarts@coastal.edu or call 843-349-6985.
