Philosophy, physics and free will are topics of discussion for CCU public forum

September 21, 2015

Coastal Carolina University faculty members Louis Rubbo, Dennis Earl and Clifford Sosis will discuss philosophy, physics and the issue of free will on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 5 p.m. in the Lib Jackson Student Union, meeting room A215. Admission is free and open to the public.

The faculty members will discuss questions such as: are we puppets of the laws that govern the natural world; are our actions merely the byproducts of factors ultimately beyond our control, where the result is that our future is determined; or are there many possible futures? The session will review the contemporary physics, as well as the philosophical theories regarding free will.

Rubbo joined the CCU faculty in 2007 and now teaches introductory astronomy and physics, along with advanced courses in computational analysis and astrophysics. His area of expertise is gravitational wave astronomy, physics education research and robotics education. Earl has been teaching metaphysics and epistemology, philosophy of science and business ethics since he joined the faculty in 2002. Sosis, who joined the faculty in 2013, teaches philosophy of science, epistemology and ethics as well.

The Lib Jackson Student Union is located at 106 Spadoni Park Circle, Conway. For more information, contact Rubbo at lrubbo@coastal.edu or call 843-349-6489. The forum is sponsored by CCU's Dept. of Philosophy and Religious Studies.
