The Ministry of Education of Japan has established a scholarship for a Coastal Carolina University student to attend Tokyo Denki University (TDU) during the 2002 fall semester. The scholarship will pay round-trip air transportation to Japan and supply a monthly stipend of approximately $700 to the exchange program participant.

TDU, which established an exchange program agreement with Coastal last summer, has agreed to accept 10 more Coastal students during the 2002 fall semester on a tuition-free basis. Coastal students will have the opportunity to take up to 15 hours of upper-level, transferable classes in a range of subjects.

During the fall 2001 semester, 10 Coastal students attended TDU on a full-time basis. All courses were taught in English, and the students lived either in an apartment near campus or with a Japanese family.

Students who participate in the program are required to take and pass Japanese 101 at Coastal. When they arrive in Japan, they also take an intensive two-week Japanese language immersion course. Students who satisfactorily complete the fall semester program in Japan will meet their foreign language requirement for their studies at Coastal.

As a result of the program, Coastal has added Japanese to its list of foreign language curricula.

Plans to bring Japanese students to Coastal through the program are under way. Future faculty exchanges between the two universities are also being discussed.

Established in 1907, TDU has a long and distinguished history, particularly in science and engineering. More than 11,000 students are enrolled at TDU.
