Jazz musicians ‘Pushing the Limits’ at CCU concert

"Pushing the Limits," a jazz collaboration between Coastal Carolina University faculty and special, Grammy award-winning artists, will perform on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 7:30 p.m. in Wheelwright Auditorium. General admission tickets are $12 to $17 with reserved seating. Discounts are available.

Howard Levy, Grammy Award-winning harmonicist, pianist, composer, producer and founding member of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, will perform with CCU faculty member Matt White and Artist-in-Residence Steve Bailey in an evening of eclectic and stylistically diverse music. The program will include jazz standards, original compositions, impromptu musical explorations and one beach music selection.

Collaborating with them will be saxophonist Kenny Anderson and Grammy award-winning drummer Quentin Baxter. There will be a number of special guests and faculty member performances as well.

Bailey is a bassist who is famous for his pioneering work with the six-string fretless bass. He has taught at CCU and is now chair of the bass department at Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Anderson, a saxophonist, is a recording artist who has toured worldwide with major recording musicians. Baxter is a jazz musician from Charleston who is the musician director for the Charleston Jazz Initiative, a multiyear research project that explores the jazz history and legacy of African-American musicians from Charleston and other places in the Carolinas.

White directs CCU's Jazz After Hours Big Band and teaches trumpet. His debut CD, "The Super Villain Jazz Band," was released in 2013. Senior citizens, OLLI members, alumni and teens may purchase tickets for $10 to $14, CCU/HGTC faculty and staff are $10 and CCU/HGTC students and children are $5.
