CCU to host forum on S.C. education

Coastal Carolina University's Spadoni College of Education will host a public forum on "The State of Education in South Carolina" on Tuesday, Oct. 27, from 6 to 8 p.m. in Wheelwright Auditorium. This event is free and open to the public, but registration is required.

State Superintendent of Education Molly Spearman is the keynote presenter. Her talk will be followed by a panel discussion with Randall Dozier. Georgetown County schools superintendent; Rick Maxey, Horry County schools superintendent; Kristi Kibler, a Georgetown teacher and Joey Trail, 2015-16 Horry County Teacher of the Year.

The forum will address current educational initiatives and issues relevant to teaching and student learning. The focus is on three key topics: curriculum standards, student learning and teacher accountability; the Every Child Achieves Act; and recruiting and retaining effective teachers and education leaders.

The event will be of particular interest to in-service and pre-service teachers, administrators, parents, community members and business leaders. The program will provide a forum for presenting and discussing current issues and initiatives relevant to the state of education in South Carolina. A question-and-answer session will be included.
