‘1940s Radio Hour’ to open at 79th Avenue Theater

October 26, 2015

Coastal Carolina University's "The 1940's Radio Hour," a play about a radio variety show set during World War II, will be presented at the 79th Avenue Theatre from Nov. 4 through Nov. 14.

The show highlights the era's Big Band music, which will be performed by CCU's Jazz Ensemble. General admission tickets are $17 with discounts available. The schedule is as follows:

* Wednesday, Nov. 4, to Saturday, Nov. 7, 7:30 p.m.

* Tuesday, Nov. 10, to Thursday, Nov. 12, 7:30 p.m.

* Friday, Nov. 13, 6 p.m. (tickets are $50)

* Saturday, Nov. 14, 3 and 7:30 p.m.

"The 1940's Radio Hour" depicts the backstage mayhem of a live broadcast during the golden age of radio. The Mutual Manhattan Variety Cavalcade, aired from New York's Hotel Astor on Dec. 21, 1942, captures the spirit of the bygone era, when the world was at war and pop music meant "Strike Up the Band" and "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy." The characters include a harassed producer whose lead singer is drunk, a delivery boy who wants a chance in front of the microphone, the second banana who dreams of singing a ballad, and a trumpet playing sound effects man who chooses a fighter plane over Glenn Miller.

Senior citizens, OLLI members, alumni, teens, and CCU/HGTC faculty and staff may purchase tickets for $12, and CCU/HGTC students and children may purchase them for $5. To reserve a ticket, call 843-349-ARTS (2787) or visit Wheelwright Auditorium Box Office between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Wheelwright Auditorium is located at 108 Spadoni Park Circle, Conway.

The premium performance on Friday, Nov. 13, is a scholarship fundraiser with $50 tickets for the CCU Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts Board of Visitors. This exclusive performance will include a reception and preshow lecture. Proceeds will benefit scholarship opportunities for humanities students. To purchase a ticket for this performance, call 843-349-6985 or email culturalarts@coastal.edu.
