TEAL Youth Day set for Nov. 5 at CCU

November 2, 2015

Coastal Carolina University and the Dalton and Linda Floyd Family Mentoring Program will host the fall TEAL Youth Day: Talking Education and Learning on Thursday, Nov. 5, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the CCU campus. Approximately 155 students from 10 elementary and five middle schools from Horry County will attend.

The purpose of the event is to provide public school students participating in the mentoring program with the opportunity to visit a college campus to see where their mentors go to school. Mentors normally visit children at their school each week. Not only does it make the college experience more "real" to these students, but it encourages them to consider higher education in their own futures.

TEAL Youth Day is hosted by at least 150 CCU student mentors from a variety of majors, as well as 50 volunteer students, faculty and staff members, and Academic Chauncey (CCU's mascot). The event will feature a variety of activities that encourage students to succeed through education, science and artistic expression. Also, each student will receive a new book to promote literacy and reading.

Attending elementary schools are Carolina Forest, Conway, Green Sea Floyds, Lakewood, Loris, Ocean Bay, River Oaks, Socastee, South Conway and Waccamaw.

Attending middle schools are Black Water, Conway, Forestbrook, Myrtle Beach and Ocean Bay.

The Dalton and Linda Floyd Family Mentoring program is housed in CCU's Biddle Center for Teaching, Learning and Community Engagement within the Spadoni College of Education. The program teaches CCU students to become positive role models for children in South Carolina schools to ensure the success of the children in and out of the classroom.
