Friction Quartet performs Nov. 9 in CCU Recital Hall

November 5, 2015

Coastal Carolina University welcomes the Friction String Quartet, which will perform on Monday, Nov. 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts. General admission is $17, with various discounts available.

The members of the San Francisco-based quartet are Kevin Rogers, violin; Otis Harriel, violin; Taija Warbelow, viola; and Doug Machiz, cello.

The group is artist-in-residence at the Napa Valley Performing Arts Center and ensemble-in-residence with San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music for the 2015-2016 season. The quartet is dedicated to expanding the string quartet repertoire and building new audiences for contemporary music.

The program is a sampling of quartet repertoire with a classical quartet piece, a 20th century composition and a contemporary work. It will feature Joseph Haydn's "Emperor" Quartet, Benjamin Britten's "String Quartet No. 2," composed in 1945, and Andy Akiho's "Mobile on a Stream into the Sound," inspired by the abstract mobiles of sculptor Alexander Calder.

Friction has given 63 world premiere performances and commissioned 30 works for string quartet, since 2011, according to the group's website. The quartet opened for Kronos Quartet, in Kronos' "Under 30" series. Friction received a Chamber Music America grant to commission a new piano quintet from Andy Akiho to be performed with Jenny Q Chai. They also received a grant from San Francisco Friends of Chamber music to commission a new work from Mark Winges. Friction is one of 11 artists featured in the San Francisco Bay Guardian's 2014 On the Rise issue, and their recording of David Conte's second string quartet was recently released on Albany Records.
