CCU to show domestic violence documentary

November 6, 2015

The "Telling Amy's Story" documentary will be shown on Tuesday, Nov. 10, at 5 p.m. in the Lib Jackson Student Union Movie Theater at Coastal Carolina University. It is free and open to the public.

"Telling Amy's Story" is about Amy Homan McGee who was murdered by her husband while their children waited for her in the car. According to the documentary, he had been abusing her for many years, and no one reached out to help her. The documentary, first proposed by Detective Deidri Fishel, aims to show viewers how to handle domestic violence cases, whether a victim or a bystander, so that cases like Amy's do not happen again.

The event is made possible through a partnership of Coastal Carolina University's Career Services, the Dean of Students Office, The Counseling Outreach Advocacy Student Team and Verizon.

The showing is also a competition with other universities for a $10,000 prize from Verizon. If CCU has the most attendance for the documentary by the end of the showing, Verizon will donate the money to CCU's local domestic violence agency, the Family Justice Center.

The Family Justice Center is located in Georgetown, S.C., and is dedicated to the creation of a community where there is zero tolerance for domestic violence. Its mission is to reduce the injuries and deaths resulting from domestic violence. It works with local agencies to provide comprehensive services to victims and educational programs for the community, while providing an emergency shelter for those in need.

The COAST stands for counseling outreach advocacy student team and is operated through CCU's Counseling Services Office. For more information, contact Chris Donevant-Haines, assistant director for Counseling Services, at 843-349-5022 or cdhaines@coastal.edu.

The COAST is also having a cell phone drive, as part of Verizon's program to support victims of domestic violence. The phones do not have to be in working condition and can be old to current, from any company. The phones must be able to have power and call 911 even without an active cellular service. Verizon will put the phones through a full reconditioning process and then donate them to domestic violence agencies. Drop old cell phones into the drop box at the front of the COAST office in the Student Union Room A-108. The drive ends on Tuesday, Nov. 10.

The Lib Jackson Movie Theater is in Room A-110 of the Lib Jackson Student Union, located at 106 Spadoni Park Circle on the Conway campus.
