Visiting professor Chavez to discuss immigration politics

November 9, 2015

"Queer Migrations, Borders and Power" is the title of a lecture being given by visiting professor Karma Chávez on Monday, Nov. 16, at 4 p.m. in the James J. Johnson Auditorium at Coastal Carolina University. A reception will follow in the anteroom. The event is free and open to the public.

Chávez advocates for LGBTQ rights and for immigration rights. Though the two issues are understood to be separate, both press for politics of inclusion in mainstream national value. She will examine coalition building at the many intersections of queer and immigration politics in the contemporary United States and beyond. She is particularly interested in how social movement building, activist rhetoric and coalitional politics work to affect marginalized peoples within existing power structures, including how immigration politics and border crossings worldwide affect marginalized communities.

Chávez is an associate professor of rhetoric, politics and culture at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She has written two books: "Standing in the Intersection: Feminist Voices, Feminist Practices in Communication Studies" and "Queer Migration Politics: Activist Rhetoric and Coalitional Possibilities," which was named Book of the Year by the GLBTQ Communication Studies Division of the National Communication Association in 2014.

LGBTQ stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer. The program is presented by CCU's Women's and Gender Studies Program.

The Johnson Auditorium is in Room 116 of the E. Craig Wall College of Business Administration Building, located at 119 Chanticleer Drive on the Conway campus.
