CCU to celebrate Native American heritage

November 16, 2015

Coastal Carolina University will celebrate Native American heritage with a performance by members of the Piscataway Nation on Wednesday, Nov. 18, at 6 p.m. in the Lib Jackson Student Union Movie Theater. The event is free and open to the public.

The Piscataway Nation Singers and Dancers, a Native American performance group, will give an educational presentation about the origins, traditions, songs, dances and beliefs of the Piscataway people. The group is internationally recognized for its living history program. The performers travel throughout Europe and North America to share authentic Native American dance, drums and songs with audiences of all ethnicities and ages.

The Piscataway tribe was once one of the largest and most powerful tribes of the Chesapeake Bay region, possessing territory that dominated all of Maryland and portions of Delaware, New Jersey, Ohio and Pennsylvania. The nation existed for nearly 15,000 years.
