Velvet Caravan to bring ‘gypsy jazz’ to CCU

January 19, 2016

Savannah gypsy jazz band Velvet Caravan will perform at Coastal Carolina University on Friday, Jan. 29, at 7:30 p.m. in the Wheelwright Auditorium. Tickets are between $20 and $25 with reserved seating. Discounts are available.

The five-member ensemble is based out of Savannah, Ga., and brings together members from Austin, Texas, to Venezuela and Slovenia. According to velvetcaravan.com, the quintet's diverse heritage contributes to its eclectic sound, as the group combines Latin and gypsy music into acoustic swing jazz to produce a unique style the group calls "gypsy jazz."

Founded in 2011, the group features Richard Ochoa, from Venezuela, a classically trained violinist with a Latin flair; Jesse Monkman on the cajon, a Peruvian percussion instrument; guitarist Sasha Strunjas, who learned jazz playing in bars with gypsies in Europe; Eric Dunn on upright bass with a bluegrass sound; and Jared Hall, on keyboard and accordion for that honky-tonk, ragtime flavor.

The Savannah Morning News said: "The music is high energy and full of passion but more importantly with a lot of sense of humor."

Senior citizens, OLLI members, alumni and teens may purchase tickets for $16-$20, CCU/HGTC faculty and staff are $16, and children and CCU/HGTC students are $5. To purchase tickets and reserve a seat, contact the Wheelwright Auditorium at 843-349-ARTS (2787) or visit between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The auditorium is located at 108 Spadoni Park, Conway.
