L.A. Times columnist gives reading at CCU

March 7, 2016

Meghan Daum, columnist for The Los Angeles Times, will read from her nonfiction work on Monday, March 14, at 5:30 p.m. in the James J. Johnson Auditorium at Coastal Carolina University. The reading, which is part of the "Words to Say It" series, is free and open to the public. A reception will follow in the anteroom.

Winner of the 2015 Pen Center USA Literary Award for Creative Nonfiction, "The Unspeakable: And Other Subjects of Discussion" is her newest book, a series of essays covering a range of subjects that circle around the idea of emotional dissonance. From her mother's death to her own coma, Daum writes honestly about tough moments in her life.

Daum is the author of three other books, including "My Misspent Youth," "The Quality of Life Report" and "Life Would Be Perfect If I Lived In that House." She also edited The New York Times bestseller "Selfish, Shallow and Self-Absorbed: Sixteen Writers on the Decision Not to Have Kids." Daum has been an opinion columnist for the Los Angeles Times since 2005, covering cultural and political topics. She is also the recipient of a 2015 Guggenheim Fellowship and a 2016 National Endowment for the Arts fellowship and is an adjunct associate professor in the MFA writing program at Columbia University's School of the Arts.

"Words to Say It" is a series sponsored by CCU's Department of English that brings noteworthy contemporary writers to campus to read and discuss their work.

The Johnson Auditorium is in Room 116 of the E. Craig Wall Sr. College of Business Administration Building, located at 119 Chanticleer Drive E. on the Conway campus.
