CCU film series presents ‘The Good German’

March 15, 2016

"The Good German," a 2006 film about the life of a post-World War II American correspondent, will be presented as part of the War and Society Film Series at Coastal Carolina University on Thursday, March 24, at 5 p.m. in Room 256 of the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts Building. The event is free and open to the public.

The film, directed by Steven Soderbergh, depicts the life of Jake Geismar, an American correspondent, after the defeat of Nazi Germany when Berlin was divided into zones of occupation. Geismar returns to Berlin to write about the Allied triumph while pursuing a more personal quest: his search for Lena, the married woman he left behind. "The Good German" is a story of espionage, love and murder. It is a recreation of a city devastated by war and a thriller that asks profound ethical questions in its exploration of the nature of justice and what we mean by good and evil in times of peace and war. The film stars George Clooney, Cate Blanchett and Tobey Maguire.

Amanda Brian, associate professor of history at CCU and chair of the Department of History, will lead a discussion about the film following the screening. "The War and Society Film Series" aims to inspire discussion and offer information about what happened in society during and after wars. The last screening of the series is "Apocalypse Now" on April 14.

The Edwards Building is located at 133 Chanticleer Drive W. on the Conway campus. For more information, contact Brian at 843-349-6653 or abrian@coastal.edu.
