Community invited to participate in CCU’s Library Week

March 29, 2016

Coastal Carolina University is celebrating National Library Week from Sunday, April 10, to Saturday, April 16, with its annual Edible Book Fair and a poetry reading, both at Kimbel Library and Bryan Information Commons, and both free and open to the community.

The first event at CCU, the Edible Book Fair, is on Wednesday, April 13, from noon to 2 p.m. Participants can submit an edible creation that conveys a book or book title or is connected to food in any way. For instance, colored gummy fish might signify "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish" by Dr. Seuss. Grapes with mad faces painted on them could be "Grapes of Wrath" by John Steinbeck. Last year's winner was "On Beyond Bugs" from the Cat in the Hat's Learning Library -- a chocolate cake in the shape of a large ant hill with bugs (raisins) going up the hill and covered with Oreo crumbs for dirt.

Entries should be dropped of at the circulation desk by noon and voting (popular vote) takes place between noon and 2 p.m., and prizes will be awarded at 2 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for Best Student Entry, Best Faculty/Staff Entry, Best Group Entry and Best Community Entry.

On Friday, April 15, at 3 p.m. on the Bryan Information Commons Lawn, an open poetry-reading event will be held, celebrating both National Library Week and National Poetry Month. To sign up to read, contact Hastings Hensel, English lecturer and coordinator of the reading, at whensel@coastal.edu.

"Libraries Transform" is the theme of the week, referring to the power of libraries to transform lives through books and resource materials.

Kimbel Library and Bryan Information Commons are located at 376 University Blvd. on the Conway campus.
