TEAL Youth Day set for April 7 at CCU

March 29, 2016

Coastal Carolina University's Dalton and Linda Floyd Family Mentoring Program will host the spring "TEAL Youth Day: Talking Education and Learning" on Thursday, April 7, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the CCU campus. Around 185 students from 13 elementary and four middle schools from Horry County will attend. The media is invited to cover the event.

The purpose of the event is to provide public school students participating in the mentoring program with the opportunity to visit a college campus to see where their mentors go to school. Mentors normally visit children at their school each week. Not only does it make the college experience more real to these students, but it motivates them to consider higher education in their own futures.

TEAL Youth Day will be hosted by at least 175 CCU student mentors, as well as 50 volunteer students, faculty and staff members and Chauncey (CCU's mascot). The event will feature a variety of activities that encourage students to succeed through education, science and artistic expression. Each student will also receive a CCU drawstring backpack which will include a book, Frisbee, pencil and notebook to reinforce the importance of literacy and reading.

Activities include a field day, drumming and dancing at the baseball stadium, lunch, the Chants Safety and Chants Challenge on Prince Lawn, and more. A sample schedule is attached.

Attending elementary schools are Aynor, Carolina Forest, Conway, Green Sea Floyds, Homewood, Loris, Ocean Bay, Palmetto Bays, Pee Dee, River Oaks, South Conway, Waccamaw and Waterway. Attending middle schools are Black Water, Conway, Myrtle Beach, and Ocean Bay.

The Dalton and Linda Floyd Family Mentoring program is housed in CCU's Biddle Center for Teaching, Learning and Community Engagement within the Spadoni College of Education. The program teaches CCU students to become positive role models for children in South Carolina schools to ensure their success in and out of the classroom.
