CCU alum Michael Kelly earns Emmy nomination

July 15, 2016

Coastal Carolina University alumnus and "House of Cards" actor Michael Kelly received his second Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama for his role on the hit Netflix show on July 14.

Kelly came to CCU on a cross-country scholarship and graduated in 1992 as the first student to receive a bachelor's degree in performing arts. He credits his pursuit of an acting career on constant encouragement from now retired CCU theatre professors Sandi Shackelford and Chuck Whetzel. He went on to earn roles in TV and film such as "The Changeling" (2008), "Now You See Me" (2013), and most recently "Everest" (2015) and "Secret in Their Eyes" (2015). In total, Kelly has appeared in 27 movies and 21 TV shows and series, including "The Sopranos," "The Good Wife" and "Law and Order."

Kelly earned the role of loyal yet cutthroat political fixer Doug Stamper in "House of Cards" in 2013. In 2015, he received his first Emmy nomination for playing Stamper in the series' third season.

The political drama, also starring actors Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright, received 11 Emmy nominations in 2015, and is nominated again in 2016 for Best Drama. The fifth season of "House of Cards" will premiere on Netflix on Friday, Feb. 24, 2017.
