Coastal Carolina University will usher in this year's freshman class along with transfer students with Welcome Week activities from Friday, Aug. 19, through Sunday, Aug. 21. The first day of classes is Aug. 22.

Welcome week is officially known as CINO TIE (CINO stands for Coastal Is Number One and TIE stands for Tradition, Integrity, Excellence).

"CINO TIE weekend is incoming students' first exposure to life at CCU," said Susannah Marshman, director of New Student and Family Programs. "The weekend of events welcomes students to campus and allows them to engage with each other in a fun, healthy and safe environment."

The events begin with Move-In Day on Friday, Aug. 19, at 9 a.m., when freshmen will move into their residence halls with the help of the Chanticrew, a group of faculty, staff and student volunteers.

In addition to Move-In Day on Friday, other events are held throughout the day, including the Family Reception at the HTC Student Recreation and Convocation Center and a Tradition Lawn Party near the Tradition residence hall on campus. Fall 2016 is the first semester that CINO and Teal Halls will be occupied by new students. Events on Saturday begin at 10 a.m. with a Beach Bash at Crown Reef Resort in Myrtle Beach, a mountain bike ride on the trails of the Waccamaw Wildlife Refuge, and a movie night featuring "Central Intelligence" at the Lib Jackson Student Union. Tickets for the movie are $2, and free popcorn will be provided.

On Sunday, students will attend the New Student Convocation in the HTC Center at 1:30 p.m. Kennedy Odede and Jessica Posner, authors of the 2016 Big Read book, will be the featured speakers. Other events on Sunday include the Big Read Discussion, a math placement test and cookouts. The Big Read for this year is "Find Me Unafraid: Love, Loss, and Hope in an African Slum." The Big Read is an annual summer reading program for all incoming CCU freshmen designed to facilitate creative and critical thinking.

Students are encouraged to bring a school supply with them to the Welcome Back Cookout on Sunday to make a positive impact on the local community; all school supplies will be donated to Help4Kids.

During the weekend, a mandatory, recurring interactive theatrical performance session called "Haven Live" will be held for each residential community on campus. Topics addressed in this performance include sex, alcohol, assault, bystander intervention, victim blaming and support.

"We hope that early exposure to these topics will reduce risks and increase awareness of what to do should something of that nature happen to them or someone they know," said Marshman.
