‘The English Patient’ to be shown in film series at CCU
The film is directed by Anthony Minghella and follows the story of a young nurse at the close of World War II as she tends to a plane crash victim. His past, shown in flashbacks, reveals an involvement in a love affair with a married woman. The film stars Ralph Fiennes, Juliette Binoche and Willem Dafoe, and won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1997. The movie has a running time of 2 hours, 42 minutes.
Following the film, Tripthi Pillai, associate professor of English at CCU, will lead a discussion on combat gnosticism and the non-combatants' experiences of war, along with postcolonial identity, nationalism and decolonization.
This is the third screening in the War & Society Film Series this fall, which focuses on showing and discussing what happens to societies during times of war. The final event in the series, "Indochine," will be presented on Nov. 8 at 5 p.m. The Lib Jackson Student Union is located at 100 Spadoni Park Circle.
