CCU song recital spotlights composers Ives and Grainger

Baritone Jeffrey Jones and tenor Kevin Hanrahan will perform a selection of songs by two eminent 20th century composers, Charles Ives and Percy Grainger, on Monday, Oct. 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the Edwards Recital Hall at Coastal Carolina University. Tickets are $7.

"Finding Their Voices: The Songs of Charles Ives and Percy Grainger" explores the song repertoire of the two American composers (though Grainger was born in Australia). Ives and Grainger both had careers that spanned the early 20th century and influenced modern nationalistic music. With the late Romantic era as their foundation, they infused their music with modern techniques in search of their unique compositional voices.

Jones, associate professor of music at CCU, has performed with multiple opera companies including the Arizona Opera, the Atlanta Opera, the Capitol City Opera and the Carolina Master Chorale, where he is currently the artist-in-residence. Jones performed in two concerts at Carnegie Hall with renowned choral conductor Robert Shaw and participated in three recordings for Telarc Records. He received a Doctor of Musical Arts in vocal performance at Arizona State University, where he also received a Master of Music in opera performance.

Kevin Hanrahan is an associate professor of voice and vocals at Glenn Korff School of Music at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Hanrahan has performed nationally and internationally in opera and recital performances. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in vocal performance and a Master of Arts M8anagement at Carnegie Mellon University. Hanrahan also earned a Doctor of Musical Arts from Arizona State University. He has worked with numerous influential conductors including Robert Page, Charles Bruffy, David Stocker and Gunther Shuller.

CCU teaching associate Daniel Francis will provide piano accompaniment.
