Lauren Kalman’s art exhibit coming to CCU’s art gallery

October 17, 2016
"Props" by Lauren Kalman

Artist Lauren Kalman's solo exhibition "But if the Crime is Beautiful…" will open Monday, Oct. 24, and run through Friday, Nov. 18, in the Rebecca Randall Bryan Art Gallery at Coastal Carolina University. A lecture with the artist will take place on Thursday, Oct. 27, at 2 p.m. with a reception following from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The exhibit and lecture are free and open to the public.

"But if the Crime is Beautiful…" consists of various objects combined with the human body to produce sculptures that are then photographed and displayed in the exhibit. According to Kalman, the objects used to make the compositions are also included in the exhibit among the sculptures and photographs as "residue of the action." These juxtapositions point to historical, political and social contexts relating to sex, gender, power, pleasure and beauty, according to the artist's statement.

Kalman earned an MFA in art and technology from Ohio State University and a BFA with a focus in metals from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. She has been awarded residencies at the Corporation of Yaddo, the Virginia Center for Creative Arts and the Santa Fe Art Institute. She has taught at various institutions, including Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design, and she is currently an assistant professor at Wayne State University in Detroit, Mich.

The gallery is located in Room 129 of the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts, located at 133 Chanticleer Drive W. on the Conway campus. It is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The gallery is the primary visual laboratory for the Department of Visual Arts at CCU and is dedicated to advancing the education of visual arts and cultivating the production, interpretation and enjoyment of objects and images in society.
