CCU reschedules Sexual Violence Awareness Week

October 18, 2016

Sexual Violence Awareness Week has been rescheduled due to Hurricane Matthew for Oct. 20 through Oct. 26 at Coastal Carolina University, with several programs and events designed to encourage discussion and raise awareness about sexual violence. All events are free and open to the public.

Sexual Violence Awareness Week is observed nationally and throughout many universities in the United States and also overseas.

Events planned for the week include:

Thursday, Oct. 20

- The Clothesline Project will be held on Prince Lawn from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Students will create shirts that display messages of support to survivors of sexual violence and hang them on a large clothesline display.

Monday, Oct. 24

- Take a Stand with the Print of Your Hand will be held on Prince Lawn from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Students, faculty and staff can put their handprint on a large banner that will be displayed at the Take Back the Night March. The event will focus on dating and domestic violence awareness, but will offer resources and information provided by the SHORE (Students Helping Others Reach Excellence) Peer Educators.

Wednesday, Oct. 26

- Take Back the Night March and Rally, a 10-year tradition, will begin at 6 p.m. in the Lib Jackson Student Union Courtyard. Faculty, staff and students are invited to march across campus chanting slogans against sexual violence with the hope of showing empathy to survivors of violence and encouraging others to take a stand on their own and "Step Up!" which is a campus bystander intervention program that encourages students (and others) to step up and help out when another student might be unable to make wise choices.
