CCU screens ‘mockumentary’ on Hitler for film series

October 19, 2016

"Look Who's Back," a 2015 German "mockumentary" about the reappearance of Adolf Hitler, will be presented on Tuesday, Oct. 25, at 5 p.m. in Coastal Carolina University's Coastal Theater inside the Lib Jackson Student Union on the main campus. A discussion will follow the presentation of the film, led by Anastasiya Shchebet, lecturer of German, and Amanda Brian, associate professor of history. This event is free and open to the public with no ticket required.

"Look Who's Back" is an adaptation of the 2012 German novel "Er ist wieder da," by Timur Vermes. Part-mockumentary, part-deadpan comedy, the film is about the paranormal reappearance of dictator Adolf Hitler in contemporary Germany and his rise as a modern media star. The discussion following the film will address the question of whether or not it is acceptable to laugh about Hitler and about the appeal of neo-fascism in Germany today.

A panel discussion will follow the film with the following CCU faculty members: Simone Boissonneault, teaching associate of German; Alex Hogue, lecturer of German; Cynthia Port, associate professor of English; and Gary Schmidt, professor of German. Brian will also participate.

Shchebet was born in St. Petersburg, Russia. She received her bachelor's degree in English and M.A. in English linguistics from Minsk State Linguistic University. Before moving to the United States, she worked as a foreign language instructor at Minsk State Linguistic University.

Brian received her Ph.D. in history from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Her research and teaching interests include modern Germany and 19th Europe. Brian is currently working on several articles and a book manuscript titled "Birth of the Scientific Child."

The film is being screened as a part of the Edwards College Film Series, sponsored by the departments of history and languages and intercultural studies. The Coastal Theater is located in Room A-110 of the Lib Jackson Student Union, 106 Spadoni Park Circle, on the Conway campus.
