CCU Department of Theatre presents ‘On the Razzle’

October 20, 2016

The Coastal Carolina University Department of Theatre presents Tom Stoppard's "On the Razzle" onstage at the Edwards Theatre from Wednesday, Oct. 26, through Friday, Oct. 28, at 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, Oct. 29, at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.; and Wednesday, Nov. 2, through Friday, Nov. 4, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $17, with discounts available.

Teeming with verbal wit, sexual innuendo and mistaken identities, "On the Razzle" is a risqué adaptation of the play that inspired "Hello Dolly!" Stoppard chronicles the slapstick misadventures of two sly, young grocer assistants as they embark on a raucous chase through 19th-century Vienna, Austria, in an attempt to escape their everyday lives.

Director Benjamin Sota, CCU assistant professor of theatre, explained that the comedy was timed to coincide with the presidential election season, and serendipitously, it may also offer a degree of comic relief for those impacted by Hurricane Matthew.

"We need sometimes to let things become a farce," Sota said. "We need to let go of them; we need a laugh. Joy is an important part of our society, and in our community, there are a lot of people who have lost a lot. Having a good laugh is one way to raise spirits."

The CCU student cast includes Peter Seifarth as Weinberl and Cody Taylor as Zangler. Other cast members include Kaleb Allen, Shayna French, Meg Groves, Cassidy Hunt, TJ Little, Autumn McNutt, Zach Montou, Emily Peiffer, Sara Plensdorf, April Pollock, Maggie Renfroe, Nikko Smith and Cameron Taylor.

General admission is $17. Senior citizens, OLLI members, CCU alumni, teens and CCU/HGTC faculty and staff are $12. CCU/HGTC students can purchase tickets for $5. There will be no final weekend Saturday matinee of this performance.

The Edwards Theatre is located in Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts on the campus of Coastal Carolina University, 133 Chanticleer Drive W., Conway.
