CCU percussion ensembles to feature world music

CalypSamba, Coastal Carolina University's World Percussion Ensemble, will showcase music styles from around the world at its fall concert on Thursday, Oct. 27, at 7:30 p.m. in Wheelwright Auditorium. General admission tickets are $7, and discounts are available.

The concert will also feature the CCU Afro-Cuban Folkoric Percussion Ensemble and the CCU Steel Band playing popular and folk music from Cuba, Trinidad and the United States. Both these groups are part of CalypSamba and will perform calypso, soca, palo and rumba styles of music.

CalypSamba is comprised of a diverse group of undergraduate students from many different majors. As a group, they have performed at arts festivals, music education conferences and dozens of public schools throughout South Carolina and the Southeastern United States. CCU's percussion ensembles are led by Jesse Willis, assistant professor of music and director of percussion studies.

Student ensemble members include: Kyle Armon, Cailin Aucoin, Moses Ballard, Kelsey Brooks, Arieal Lesure, Ian Mahaffey, Melissa Martinez, Jose Rangel, Will Saylor, Phillip Thomas and Brandon Vaughn.

Senior citizens, OLLI members, CCU alumni, teenagers and children and CCU/HGTC faculty and staff may purchase tickets for $5, and CCU/HGTC students and may purchase them for $3.
