CCU ensemble to perform acoustic pop songs

Coastal Carolina University's new student ensemble Acoustic Songbook will perform Tuesday, Dec. 6, at 7:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts building. General admission is $7.

The ensemble, which showcases the talents of a small group of student vocalists and guitarists, will perform "unplugged" versions of popular songs from a variety of genres, including folk, Americana, jazz, musical theater, musical film and the British Invasion. The concert will be directed by David Bankston, an associate professor of music at CCU.

Bankston earned his Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Louisiana. He earned a Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of South Carolina. Bankston has performed extensively in opera and musical theater singing in lead roles with American companies such as Houston Grand Opera, Washington Opera, Opera Theatre of St. Louis, New Orleans Opera and the Lyric Opera of Kansas City. His musical theater credits include starring roles in Shenandoah and Show Boat. Bankston has also written two CDs of original songs and a musical play with composer Tony Makarome called "Faybulous," based on two of Aesop's fables.

Discounted tickets are available. CCU/HGTC faculty and staff tickets are $5 and CCU/HGTC students and children are $3.
