"Pan's Labyrinth," an Oscar-winning 2006 film directed by Guillermo del Toro, will be shown at Coastal Carolina University on Tuesday, Jan. 17, at 5 p.m. at The Coastal Theater in the Lib Jackson Student Union, Room A-110. The event is free and open to the public.

The film, which is being shown as a part of CCU's International Film Series: Crossing Borders, is set in Spain in 1944, five years after the Spanish Civil War. The film follows a young girl, Ofelia, as she escapes from her torn society and her harsh stepfather by entertaining a fantasy world. Here, Ofelia has to complete tasks that will grant her immortality and allow her to see her deceased father once again. The film tells the story of a post-war society, where rebels fight against the dictatorship that rules Spain.

The film series is being sponsored by the Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies at CCU. Following the screening, a panel will be led by Jorge Perez, associate professor of languages and intercultural studies, and Alejandro Muñoz-Garcés, assistant professor of languages and intercultural studies, to discuss the film's historical context. Two more films will be screened this semester as part of the series: "Life is Beautiful" on Jan. 31 and "Persepolis" on Feb. 21.

The film will be shown in Spanish with English subtitles. The Lib Jackson Student Union is located at 100 Spadoni Park Circle on the main Conway campus.
