Manigo concert kicks off Black History series at CCU

January 27, 2017

Coastal Carolina University's Making Black History series will present a musical performance by David Manigo on Wednesday, Feb. 1, at 6 p.m. in the Edwards Recital Hall of the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts building. This concert is free and open to the public.

Manigo and his special guests will perform songs ranging from traditional gospel to contemporary. Other performers include Sasia Manigo, Ronald Watson, Tamir Mubarick and Richard Williams.

Manigo has been the music/choral director of the Coastal Carolina University Gospel Choir, now known as the Coastal Inspirational Ambassadors, from 2003 to 2016.

In 1974, he enrolled at Coastal Carolina College, then a branch campus of the University of South Carolina, where he studied music for two years, focusing on piano, theory, and arranging and singing in concert gospel choirs. He earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education with a minor in music, and went on to earn a master's degree in administration from USC.

Manigo was a part of a band that toured with many groups in the mid 1970s, such as the O'Jays, Kool and the Gang, James Brown, Peabo Bryson, Natalie Cole and the Spinners. He founded Thee Gote Production, a music production company that specializes in single artists/small groups and re-recording lead vocals and solo instruments.

This concert is part of the Making Black History series, sponsored by CCU's Multicultural and Inclusion programs, for Spring 2017. The next event is a public talk by Amber Campbell on Thursday, Feb. 9, at 6 p.m. in the Edwards Recital Hall. The three-time Olympic athlete and CCU alumna will discuss her personal journey.

The Edwards Recital Hall (Room 152) is located in the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts building at 133 Chanticleer Drive W. on the main Conway campus.
