South China Sea conflict is topic of CCU talk
The discussion will be led by CCU associate professor of politics Min Ye and aims to inform attendees about the competing territorial claims in the South China Sea. The South China Sea is a 1.4 million-square-mile section of the Pacific Ocean located south of Chine, east of Vietnam and Cambodia, northwest of the Philippines and north of Borneo. This area has been a heated territory since the 1951 San Francisco Treaty failed to divide the region after World War II. There are islands and reefs in the region that could be profitable to the nation that claims them, and there is believed to be an abundance of crude oil and natural gas beneath the sea.
The discussion is the last of the four-part Great Decisions in Foreign Policy Lecture Series at CCU and is jointly sponsored by the Department of Politics, the Edgar Dyer Institute for Leadership and Public Policy and Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI). An online course in American Studies was offered as a complement to the series. Great Decisions is a nationwide world affairs educational program offering discussion and debate on topics related to international affairs, national security and U.S. foreign policy. The Foreign Policy Association selects annual topics for the program, and CCU offers four of the eight topics in a lecture series.
Ye is an alumnus of Remin University in Bejing, China, the Foreign Affairs College of China in Bejing and the University of Wisconsin at Milwuakee. Ye earned his B.A. in Economics, M.A. in International Studies and his Ph.D. in Political Science. Ye's areas of expertise include political data analysis, East Asian studies and international relations. He has authored and co-authored numerous pieces published in International Interactions, Studies of Conflict and Terrorism, Korean Journal of Social Science, Journal of Political Science Education, Journal of Political Science, Korea Observer, Pacific Focus, Foreign Policy Analysis, and Journal of Asian and African Studies.
