CCU film series showing ‘The Counterfeiters’

February 21, 2017

Coastal Carolina University's War & Society Film Series will screen the 2008 Academy Award-winning film "The Counterfeiters," on Tuesday, Feb. 28, at 5 p.m. in The Coastal Theater. Admission is free and open to the public. No ticket is required.

"The Counterfeiters" is based on the true story of Salomon Sorowitsch, played by Karl Markovics, a swindler who made a name for himself as Berlin's "king of the counterfeiters." Sorowitsch's life of women and easy money comes to a halt when he's arrested and placed in a Nazi concentration camp. His unique skills get him transferred to an upgraded camp, where he is forced into producing fake foreign currency. The film won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2008 and is shown in German with English subtitles.

Following the showing of the film, Gary Schmidt, professor of German and chair of CCU's Department of Languages and Intercultural Studies, will lead a discussion about how the Holocaust is portrayed in film and literature. Schmidt will also discuss the importance of the film being a German-Austrian production and how it gives Americans a new perspective.

Schmidt earned a bachelor's degree in international relations and German from Knox College, a master's degree in secondary education from Northern Illinois University, a master's degree in German from the University of California at Santa Barbara and a doctorate in German from Washington University in St. Louis.

The Coastal Theater is located in Room A-110 of the Lib Jackson Student Union, located at 106 Spadoni Park Circle on the Conway campus. For more information, call Schmidt at 843-349-2741 or email gschmidt@coastal.edu.
