Artist Liz Miller's work will be displayed in a solo exhibition titled "Requisite Beguilement" in the Rebecca Randall Bryan Art Gallery at Coastal Carolina University from Tuesday, Feb. 28, to Friday, March 31. A lecture with the artist will take place on Thursday, March 2, at 2 p.m., and a reception will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on the same day. The exhibit is free and open to the public, as are the lecture and reception.

Miller's mixed media installations re-contextualize simplified shapes, signs and symbols from disparate historical and contemporary imagery to create abstract fictions. Her use of felt, foam and other tactile materials further complicate questions of source, masking the identity of forms while allowing them to inhabit both sculptural and two-dimensional space.

"Although more recent works have departed from the wall, becoming much more sculptural, an allegiance to drawing and painting is still there - through the creation of shadows on the walls, the interplay between 2D and 3D, or simply the controlled backdrop that the wall provides," Miller says about her exhibition.

Miller earned an MFA in drawing and painting from the University of Minnesota and a BFA in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design. She has started teaching installation art at Minnesota State University, where she has also taught drawing for nine years. The gallery is located in Room 129 of the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts, located at 133 Chanticleer Drive W., Conway. The gallery is the primary visual laboratory for the Department of Visual Arts at CCU and is dedicated to advancing the education of visual artists and cultivating the production, interpretation, and enjoyment of objects and images in society.
