CCU to hold third annual Out of the Darkness Walk

February 28, 2017

Coastal Carolina University will hold the third annual Out of the Darkness Walk to Fight Suicide on Saturday, March 18, at 11 a.m. in Spadoni Park. The walk is free and open to the public and registration for the event will begin at 10 a.m. The event is being sponsored by CCU's Counseling Services and Counseling Outreach Advocacy Student Team (COAST).

The purpose of the Out of the Darkness Walk to Fight Suicide is to support survivors of suicide, those who have lost loved ones and those who are struggling. The event will open with an Honor Bead Ceremony. Participants receive colored beaded necklaces that represent different experiences related to suicide and depression.

The colors of the beads have specific meanings:

- White - the loss of a child

- Red - the loss of a spouse or partner

- Gold - the loss of a parent

- Orange - the loss of a sibling

- Purple - the loss of a relative or friend

- Silver - the loss of a first responder/military

- Green - a personal struggle or attempt

- Blue - support of suicide prevention

- Teal - represents a friend or family member of someone who struggles with suicide or has attempted

The campus walk begins after the Honor Bead Ceremony. The participants will then return to Spadoni Park for a closing ceremony.

The Students Helping Others Reach Excellence (SHORE) team at CCU will also be sponsoring an Out of the Darkness fundraiser at Chipotle, a restaurant near Coastal Grand Mall, on Thursday, March 16, from 4 to 9 p.m. Chipotle will donate 50 percent of proceeds from each customer who mentions the walk when they check out.

Last year's event raised $5,675, and this year's goal is $6,000. All funds raised for both events will benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Spadoni Park is located in front of Wheelwright Auditorium at 108 Spadoni Park Circle on the Conway campus.
