Visiting literature scholar to speak at CCU

March 9, 2017
Peter Rabinowitz

Peter Rabinowitz, an English professor at Hamilton College, will give a talk at Coastal Carolina University about why readers favor certain passages in books. The talk is scheduled for Thursday, March 16, at 6 p.m. in the Recital Hall in the Thomas W. and Robin W. Edwards College of Humanities and Fine Arts; the event is free and open to the public.

"Out of Context, In Your Heart: Some Thoughts on Narratology of the Moment," will focus on why readers often circle back to certain passages in their favorite novels.

"Traditional academic practice insists on the priority of the whole," says Rabinowitz. "We are told that a moment only has value in terms of its contribution to a larger structure." He believes these favorite passages have weight on their own and deserve to be liberated and discussed rather than held as "guilty pleasures." The aim of his talk is to focus on those favored passages and why they affect us the way they do.

The event is presented by CCU's Department of English as part of its Master of Arts in Writing Visiting Scholar series.

Rabinowitz is a professor of comparative literature at Hamilton College in New York, where he has worked since 1974. He earned a bachelor's degree, master's degree and doctorate from the University of Chicago. He has been published extensively in scholarly journals ad has won multiple awards in his 43 years of teaching. In 2013, he was named the Carolyn C. and David M. Ellis Distinguished Teaching Professor of Comparative Literature. The award is given to a faculty member who has achieved professional distinction and demonstrates a commitment to the professional development of faculty as well as the intellectual development of students.

He has written several books, and he most recently co-authored (with James Phelan, David Herman, Brian Richardson and Robyn Warhol) "Narrative Theory: Core Concepts and Critical Debates (2012)."

The Recital Hall is in Room 152 of the Edwards College, located at 133 Chanticleer Drive W. on the main Conway campus.
